Orthodontics
Braces and other orthodontic treatments effectively correct gaps between teeth, protruding teeth, an underbite and crooked teeth. Special appliances gradually move the teeth and correct the position of the jaws: closing gaps, straightening crowded or crooked teeth, and correcting deep bite, crossbite, open bite and underbite, as well as skeletal overbite and underbite. The result is a straight, healthy smile and balanced proportions of the lips, nose and chin.
1. Orthodontics for children
The ideal age to start orthodontic treatment in children is 6–12, while baby teeth are being replaced. The jaws are still growing at this stage, so correcting the bite and aligning the teeth is easier and more effective, and the result improves the smile, the face and chewing function.
In addition to braces and clear aligners, four special appliances are used during the growth period in children aged 6–12:
- EF — myofunctional appliance
- Headgear — to correct an overbite caused by jaw position
- Facemask — to correct an underbite caused by jaw position
- Quad-Helix — to widen the dental arch and create space for the teeth
2. Orthodontics for adults
Adult treatment is carried out once all permanent teeth have come in, and modern techniques make it possible to correct the bite at any age. Still, the earlier treatment starts, the easier it is to correct problems, prevent complications and keep the teeth healthy.
3. Common treatment options
a. Braces
Metal and ceramic braces are the most widely used option: they are affordable and effective for all types of misalignment. The downsides are that they are visible, can be uncomfortable when eating and make cleaning harder.
b. Invisalign clear aligners
Invisalign is a system of clear aligners custom-made according to the orthodontist's treatment plan. The aligners, made of biocompatible plastic, replace wires and brackets. The method combines excellent aesthetics with precisely planned tooth movement.
